Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame – Class of 2013

Barbara Polston – Phoenix Area


From the Phoenix area, Barbara is a teacher, lecturer, founder, editor and award winning quilter.  Barbara began quilting as a hobby and has become a professional quilter while doing all these things.

A contributing editor for the American Quilter Magazine from 2007 to 2010, Editor of The Quilting Quarterly from 2010 to the present, while at the same time writing a syndicated column for the Country Register, Barbara shares her love of quilting with the public.

Serving on numerous Board of Directors including the Arizona Quilters Guild, the National Quilting Association, the Association of Pacific West Quilters and the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame, she has shared her leadership and capabilities with charitable organizations throughout the country.

Her awards include Best Miniature at the Vermont Quilt Festival in 2011, Best of Show at the Rim Country Quilt Roundup in 2012 and first place recognitions at the American Quilters’ Society Show and Contest and the National Quilting Association.

Susie Weaver – Tucson


Living in Tucson, Susie has become a national teacher, award winning quilter, designer and publisher.  Winning Best of Show in 2004 at the Tucson Quilt Fiesta as well numerous ribbons at other venues, Susie is known for her traditional style quilts that she takes to perfection.

Joining the Tucson Quilters Guild in 1994, she has been an active member chairing the Block of the Month, Co-chairing the Quilt Show in 2000 as well as other volunteer positions. In addition, Susie has volunteered with Quilt for a Cause since its inception in 2006 donating as well as participating in the auction itself.

Primarily known as a teacher, she has taught from Alaska to Wisconsin always adapting her classes to challenge and bring out the best in each student.  She builds students’ self-confidence with the correct application of skills and proper use of tools.

In addition, Susie has self-published fifteen patterns, two of which have been recognized in national publications.  One of her quilts appeared in the 2007 calendar of the American Quilt Society.

Nancy Horn – Phoenix Area  1928-2011


Nancy taught classes from 1996 to 2009 at both The Quilted Apple and The Bernina Connection.  It was estimated that she reached well over a thousand students during her teaching time.  She had a very soft voice that gently encouraged each student to try, many walking into class as quilters and leaving as quilt artists.

Nancy’s quilts and wearable creations have been displayed in the Smithsonian Museum, the United Arab Emirates Embassy, the Arizona State Fair, the Tactile Architecture Exhibit and in private collections.  Her creativity impacted many through her teaching, sharing and in the giving of her knowledge.

Sally Hatfield – Globe


Sally is a resident of Globe since 2000.  She first began teaching at Johnny’s Country Corner in Globe while being a certified NQA judge.  In addition, Sally has served for many years as Treasurer of the Copper Country Quilters in Globe as well as a vibrant and important part of Globe.

On a national level, Sally has served two terms as Second Vice President of the National Quilting Association, the chair of the NQA Grant program, Coordinator of retreats and seminars, Show Data entry Coordinator.

Within Arizona, Sally also committed to the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame serving on the first Board of Directors.  Since rotating off the Board, Sally has continued her commitment to Arizona by becoming the Friends Liaison for the Hall of Fame and keeping the database of Friends of the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame.

In addition to all this hard work, Sally is an award winning quilter.  This year, Sally won Best of Show for her entry, “Faith, Hope, Love” in Copper Country Quilters annual Show while serving as the Quilt Show Chair!

Because of her dedication to all things quilting, Sally was chosen this years Friends Favorite. This designation means that of all the inductees in the Class of 2013, Sally obtained the most votes from the Friends of the Hall of Fame.
